Shamima Begum, 22, an eight-month pregnant housewife, was viciously beaten by her husband and in-laws for expecting a girl, in Kashiani upazila’s Bhutpasa village of Gopalganj on Thursday.
Four years ago, Shamima, the daughter of Alamgir Biswas from Bhatiapara village, got married to Salam Sheikh’s son Ujjal Sheikh from Bhutpasa in the same upazila. The couple have a three-year-old daughter called Anika.
Ujjal works at Badshah Textile mill in Mymensingh.
Shamima complained that after an ultrasonography at a local clinic on August 26 revealed that she was expecting a girl, both her husband and her in-laws became enraged. Since then, she has been continuously pushed toward getting an abortion.
Ujjal even cut off communication with his pregnant wife and stopped sending her money for treatment and medicines.
On Thursday morning, when Shamima refused to get an abortion, her husband, her father-in-law Salam and mother-in-law Nilufa Begum beat her viciously.
Later, locals rescued her and brought her to Kashiani upazila Health Complex where she is currently undergoing treatment, confirmed Dr Nurul Afsar, a medical officer.
Dr Nurul said Shamima has injury marks on her body. She has fallen ill further due to her pregnancy.
The housewife has said she will file a complaint against Ujjal and his family in this regard.
The correspondent has received no statement from the accused husband despite contacting him several times over the phone.
AK Ali Noor Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) at Kashiani police station, said he has not yet received a complaint. However, he assured that legal action would be taken after receiving it.
