Locals said a herd of wild elephants came down from the hills of Meghalaya state of India and rampaged Sandhyakura village at around 9pm on Wednesday.
Uttam Marak, 55, was trampled when he and other villagers tried to drive the elephants away from populated areas.
He was pronounced dead at Sherpur Sadar Hospital.
