Mostafa Kamal, officer-in charge of Naldanga police station, said: “Madhnagar BCL president Shariful Islam Shamim demanded a citizen certificate from UP member Shahidul Islam Sanjoy around 1pm.
“When the UP member refused to give the certificate, Shamim and his followers assaulted the UP member and Secretary Nazmul Islam,” the OC said.
They also ransacked the office and scattered files in the room.
When contacted, Amzad Hossein, chairman of the union, said: “I have heard the matter.”
However, the BCL president Shamim denied having attacked any UP member and admitted that they engaged in an altercation with the UP member when he refused to give the certificate.
