Update : 27 Nov 2016, 07:47 PM
According to local sources, teachers and students of Phulbaria Degree College brought out a procession in the district town around 12:30pm, demanding nationalisation of the college. Later, the agitators locked the Phulbaria-Mymensigh Highway to realise their demand and police tried to disperse them, triggering a clash between police and demonstrators. Police then charged batons as well as opened fire on them, leaving at least 20 people injured. Of the injured, Safar Ali, a pedestrian, died on the way to Churkhai Community Hospital while Abul Kalam Azad, an associate professor of Phulbaria Degree College, died at the hospital.Pic_3Rifat Khan Razib, officer-in-charge of Phulbari police station, claimed that Safar had not died on the spot of demonstration. But he declined to comment over the death of the college teacher. Mafizuddin, residential medical officer of Churkhai Community Hospital, said Safar Ali might died due to cardiac arrest. “We will know the reason of the death after getting post-mortem examination report,” he said.
