An alleged ringleader of an inter-district robber gang was killed in a “gunfight” with police at Horidrabaria village, Amtoli upazila, Barguna early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Jabbar, 45, son of late Amjad Ali Hawladar, a resident of Kalagachhia village in the upazila.
Superintendent of Police, Barguna Bijoy Bosak said acting on a secret information that a gang of robbers was preparing to commit robbery at Kalagachhia village, a joint team of police and detective branch conducted a raid at Al Amin’s house around 3am and arrested Jabbar from the house.
Following his confessional statement, the team conducted an arms recovery drive at Horidrabaria village.
When the team reached there, cohorts of Jabbar opened fire on the police, forced law enforcers to retaliate triggering a gunfight, said the SP in a press briefing around 2pm.
At one stage of the gunfight, Jabbar was trying to escape from police custody, but caught in the line of fire while his associates managed to flee scene.
Later, police rescued wounded Jabbar from the spot and sent him to Amtoli Upazila Health Complex where on duty doctor declared him dead.
Four policemen Abdul Kuddus, 32, Md Mamun, 39, Md Habibur Rahman, 40, and Abul Kalam, 58, were injured during the gunfight.
Jabbar was wanted in 23 cases filed with different police stations in the district.
Hearing the death news of Jabbar, locals brought out a joy procession in the area as well as distributed sweets in the area.
