JMB activist Ataullah sentenced to jail in Sirajganj

A court has sentenced a member of the banned militant outfit JMB to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

District and Sessions Judge Fahmida Kader of Sirajganj Special Tribunal 1 delivered the verdict on Sunday. 

The convict, Md Ataullah alias Bahadur Ali, 30, was also fined Tk4,000, and sentenced to another six months of imprisonment in default.

Ataullah hailed from Maizbhandari Village under Fatikchhari Upazila of Chittagong. The Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested him from a mosque in Tarash Upazila of Sirajganj on July 18, 2016.

DB Police told the correspondent: “Ataullah was arrested on charges of instigating the jihadist movement in remote areas of Sirajganj, by spreading propaganda among the local people.

“He is also the brother-in-law of militant leader Tarikul, who died in a bomb blast in Bogura on April 3 this year.”

Before his arrest, Ataullah was serving as the Imam of a local mosque in Tarash since 2013. Police also seized 16 Jihadi books from his wife Sakera Khatun, who is the sister of the now deceased Tarikul.
