A Dhaka court has handed down death penalty to seven persons for killing Swechchasebak League leader Monir Uddin Monu.
Dhaka Speedy Trail Tribunal 4 Judge ABM Nizamul Hoque passed the verdict on Monday afternoon.
The court also awarded life imprisonment to one for the killing. She is Jahanara Begum. She was also fined Tk20,000.
The death row convicts are Mahmudur Rahman Sohel, Hasan Sarwar Dipu, Md Shahadat, Shafiq, Mintu, Noman Ibn Bashar and Liton Hossain.
Of the convicts, Sohel and Dipu are now in jail while the others are absconding.
Monir Uddin Monu, former vice president of Sechchasebak League's Mirpur ward no 12 unit, was shot dead by terrorists on August 15, 2006.
