Update : 06 Jan 2015, 08:04 AM

Police have sued 500 activists of the BNP-led 20-party alliance including its Chittagong unit President Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on charges of vandalism, arson, blasts and attacks on policemen on Monday.

Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector Ekramullah filed the case accusing 300 named and 200 unnamed BNP-Jamaat activists around 12:30am on Tuesday.

AKM Mohiuddin Selim, officer-in-charge of Kotoali police station, said BNP’s Chittagong city unit President Amir Khosru Chowdhury and General Secretary Dr Shahdat Hossain was made accused among the 500 leaders and activists.

Some 30 activists were hurt when police dispersed a BNP rally in front of Nosimon Bhaban on Monday morning in Chittagong. Later the police arrested some 250 leaders and activists.

On Monday, BNP chief Khaleda Zia called party men to enforce a countrywide blockade until the government allows the party to hold rallies.

The BNP had announced that it would mark January 5 as one year of 'death of democracy' while the Awami League was set to celebrate 'rebirth of democracy' on the same day.

The Awami League won the national election on Jan 5, 2014 and swept to power, virtually uncontested, as the main opposition BNP had boycotted the polls.
