Latif faces fresh arrest warrant

A Barisal court issued arrest warrant against former minister Abdul Latif Siddique, who has already been arrested for hurting religious sentiment.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Hussain passed the order on Thursday afternoon, two days after Latif Siddique was arrested on surrender.

The court asked the authorities to produce the former minister before it on January 21, 2015, as he failed appear before his court within November 26, responding a summon.

Mustafizur Rahman Litu, an activist of Tablig Jamaat from Katpatty area of the city, filed a compliant against Latif on October 2.

Litu said: “Latif hurts my religious sentiment by making controversial remarks against Islam, Hajj and Prophet Muhammad(SM) in New York on September 28.”  

Accepting the compliant, the court summoned Latif and asked him to appear before it by November 26.

Earlier, another Barisal court also asked the politician to appear before it on December 28 to give explanation over his remarks. 

More than a dozen other cases have been filed against Latif for his derogatory remarks of September 28 at a meeting in New York.

On that day, he remarked on Hajj, Ijtema and the PM’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

Following the remarks, he was sacked from the cabinet as ICT, post and telecom minister on October 12. His Presidium and primary membership in the ruling Awami League was also annulled soon after.

The Awami League made it clear that the party would not take responsibility of its former policymaker’s statements. Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said: “He is on his own.”
