The High Court yesterday rejected a bail petition of the personal secretary of BNP leader Tarique Rahman in Tk21 crore bribery case involving the murder of a Bashundhara Group director.
Tarique’s PS Mia Nur Uddin Apu, who had left the country in 2007 and returned this June, was sent to jail on June 18 upon surrendering to a Dhaka court.
The Anti-Corruption Commission had filed the case with Ramna police station on October 4, 2007, claiming that several people including Tarique Rahman were involved in receiving and giving bribes to ensure that Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir, son of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar alias Shah Alam, did not have to face the charges of murdering the group’s director Humayun Kabir Sabbir.
Apu filed the bail petition with the High Court in July.
The High Court bench of Justice M Moazzam Husain and Justice Md Badruzzaman yesterday heard arguments and then rejected the petition.
Apu’s lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told reporters that other accused in the case except his client were now on bail, so they would file an appeal with the Supreme Court against the High Court decision.
