A traffic sergeant was suspended on the charge of beating up a truck driver in Chittagong city yesterday morning.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Traffic-West Zone) Mahmuda Begum confirmed this to the Dhaka Tribune.
Traffic Sergeant Nur-e-Alam beat up truck driver Ali Hossain, 44, allegedly after he got Tk100 less that what he had demanded of him as bribe around 10am.
He had demanded the truck driver of Tk 400.
Transport workers heard of it and took to streets blocking Dhaka-Chittagong Highway from Chittagong city’s Colonel Hat area to City Gate area around 11am, resulting in a huge traffic jam.
Akbar Shah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Majid told the Dhaka Tribune that they lifted the blockade around an hour after police assured them of taking action against the police and looking into this incident.
