Transparency International Bangladesh has demanded exemplary punishment be awarded to those responsible for maiming Limon Hossain, who saw the last case again him dropped on Wednesday.
Expressing relief over the event, the TIB in a statement yesterday also called for punishing those who acted as instigators and had direct roles in registering the conspiratorial and false case to harass him.
Besides, the anti-corruption watchdog demanded compensation for the youth, who lost one of his legs in a RAB shooting in 2011.
TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman in the statement said clearing Limon and his family of the charges in the false case would bring a slight relief to the people’s mind but it was a tiny step towards establishment of justice.
He said it happened much late but withdrawal of the case was not enough.
“Those who, without a reason, brutally maimed the innocent boy for life must be subjected to legal proceedings and given exemplary punishment so that law enforcers do not repeat such an incident in violation of law and justice,” he said.
The TIB official called on the government to bear financial responsibilities for Limon and his family members until he completes his studies and establishes himself professionally.
“Such an incident that illustrates a flagrant violation of human rights of an ordinary citizen by law enforcers has shaken people’s reliance upon this law enforcement agency. There is no alternative but to bring those responsible for the incident to book after identifying them through a thorough investigation that should be conducted by an impartial and high-powered probe committee,” he said.
The government’s commitment to build law enforcement agencies with the aim of serving people will become an empty promise if the offenders cannot be brought to justice, he added.
