Update : 16 Oct 2014, 07:25 PM

A 35-year old woman was released yesterday from Sylhet jail after suffering undue imprisonment for three years, one month and 19 days.

By the order of Metropolitan magistrate judge Anwarul Islam, Marjana was released at around 3pm and handed her over to district women lawyers’ association’s custody.

Sources said, Aftabur Rahman, father of the victim and a resident of Majortila Islampur area filed a General Diary with Shah Poran police station on August 27 of 2011.

Following the GD, police picked up Marjana and later a court sent her to Sylhet central jail. Since then, no family member inquired of her.

Jail authority said, Marjana was a healthy individual and had no sign of mental illness. Moreover, she was not a convict under any case but suffered imprisonment.

The Sylhet chapter of Bangladesh Mahila Ainjibi Samity and some human rights organisation came forward upon hearing the story of Marjana. With the intervention of judge Anwarul Islam, they were able to free her.

When contacted, Marjana’s father said it was an internal family matter and requested no media coverage.

Head of Sylhet women lawyers association, advocate Syeda Shirin Akter expressed rage over the matter and condemned Marjana’s family for the incident. However, Sylhet jail super Abdul Kuddus refused to comment on this.
