Pro-BNP lawyers boycott Supreme Court

Update : 22 Sep 2014, 10:03 PM

Pro-BNP lawyers yesterday boycotted the Supreme Court as part of their countrywide programme, demanding cancellation of the latest constitutional amendment.

The lawyers stayed out of the courtrooms during a dawn-to-dusk strike enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance in protest against the amendment.

A procession was also brought out by a group of lawyers led by Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia at the court premises around 11am.  They locked four gates of the Supreme Court Bar Association building, barring entrance to the main building of SC.

Yesterday, nine vacation benches were supposed to sit but visiting the court building from 11:15am to 12pm it was found that only one single bench sat for a while.

Justice Gobindo Chandro Thakur’s single bench sat around 11:30am in court room 12 of the main SC building. Chamber Judge AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury also sat and did case proceedings during the court time.

The boycott programme was declared by the Bangladesh Bar Council on Saturday demanding annulment of the 16th amendment that empowered lawmakers to impeach Supreme Court judges on grounds of misbehaviour or misconduct.
