Police finally take journo Akhil Poddar’s case

Update : 13 Sep 2014, 08:53 PM

Following a High Court order, the Kumarkhali police has registered a case over the assault on ETV journalist Akhil Poddar.

Kumarkhali OC Lutfor Rahman recorded the case against ASI Abul Kalam of the same station on Friday night.

Police earlier refused to register the case when the victim along with local journalists had gone to the police station to file a case over the incident that took place on August 27.

Upon a writ petition, the High Court on September 7 ordered the OC to register an FIR over the issue within 24 hours. The court also directed the home secretary to submit a report within four weeks after forming a probe committee to look into the incident.

The Kumarkhali OC has been asked to submit a compliance report by September 17.

Witnesses say Akhil was returning home at Khoksha from Kushtia town with Manirul Islam of Mohana TV on a motorcycle on August 27. They were stopped by ASI Kalam in Batikamara area of Kumarkhali, who first assaulted Manirul for not having proper documents. As Akhil protested, the officer handcuffed him and beat up mercilessly.

Following this, local journalists besieged the police station demanding justice. Later senior officials including the deputy commissioner visited the police station and calmed the agitators. ASI Kalam was withdrawn immediately.

Doctors say Akhil has several injury marks on his head. His ears and eyes have been badly affected.
