Govt files criminal cases against fake freedom fighters

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Hoque told the parliament that the government has cancelled the certificates and gazettes of 182 fake freedom fighters and filed criminal cases against them.

"The work to identify fake freedom fighters is underway. The National Security Intelligence (NSI) has already identified 182 certificates of fake freedom fighters and necessary action has already been taken in this regard," he told the House while replying to a question of treasury bench member Selina Begum.

Deputy Speaker M Fazle Rabbi Miah was in the chair.

Referring to the Freedom Fighter's certificates, the minister said the government provided around 1,87,596 certificates to the Freedom Fighters till now, while the BNP-Jamaat alliance government prepared a list of Freedom Fighters numbering more than 45,000 during its regime.

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given instruction to identify fake freedom fighter's certificates and take necessary steps against them," Mozammel added.

Answering to a supplementary of independent lawmaker Hazi Mohammad Selim, the minister said: "Elderly Freedom Fighters will be able to apply for certificates through the manual prescribed forms along with the online process." Some 14,000 Freedom Fighters applied through the manual process, he also said.

He said the government already received 1,02,047 applications for Freedom Fighter certificates. The final list will be published in December this year.

"We hope to issue digitised certificates for the Freedom Fighters on March 26 next year," he told the House.
