Fugitive physician sent to jail

A Dhaka court yesterday sent a physician to jail who had earlier escaped a courtroom dock after he was denied bail.

Acting Judge Jakia Pervin of Dhaka Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order when the Dhaka Medical College Hospital physician Atiur Rahman surrendered before the court.

Earlier on August 27, Atiur, an assistant professor of surgical department of DMCH, along with another doctor Moshiur Rahman escaped from the dock of the courtroom.

On that day, the court also rejected the bail petitions of four former DMCH officials and a trader, and sent them to jail in the graft case filed for misappropriating Tk2.31 crore in machinery purchase.

The five were DMCH ex-director Bazle Qader, its ex-deputy director Foyzullah, and two former accounts officers both named Nazrul Islam and proprietor Habibur Rahman of surgical instrument supplier Habib Traders.

According to the case details, the accused in connivance with each other misappropriated Tk2.31 crore from different machinery purchase of DMCH.
