A Dhaka court yesterday denied the bail plea of Awami League leader Zahidul Islam Tipu, accused in the murder of Jubo League leader Reazul Haque Khan Milky, and sent him to prison.
The court also postponed the hearing of remand petition by the investigating officer of the case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Anwar Sadat issued the orders after hearing both the bail and remand petitions.
However, the court asked police to interrogate Tipu at the jail gate within the next five working days.
Earlier on August 20, Tipu, general secretary of Awami League’s Motijheel unit, surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case.
On the same day, ABM Siddiqur Rahman, assistant superintendent of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who is also investigating the case, filed a plea before the court seeking a 10-day remand for Tipu.
After hearing the petitioners, the court denied the bail and fixed yesterday for the remand petition’s hearing, which was also denied by the court.
On June 17, a Dhaka court ordered the CID to re-investigate the case following a no-confidence petition filed by Milky’s brother Major Rashedul Haq Khan, also the complainant of the case.
In the petition, he mentioned that the investigation officer had intentionally dropped names of several accused to divert the course of investigation. Milky, organising secretary of Dhaka City (South) Jubo League, was gunned down on the night of July 30 last year in front of a shopping mall in the capital’s Gulshan area. Soon after the murder, the Rapid Action Battalion arrested prime accused Tarek from a hospital in Uttara, hours after the murder took place.
However, he was killed in a “shootout” with the RAB members on August 1 last year.
