An High Court bench has dropped a writ petition from its cause list that challenged the restoration of parliament’s authority to impeach Supreme Court judges.
The vacation bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman declined to hear the petition on Thursday afternoon, saying the plea is pre-matured as the move had only been approved by the cabinet.
The draft of the “Constitution (16th Amendment) Act 2014" is yet to be placed before the parliament, Deputy Attorney General Murad Reza told the petitioner.
Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the petition.
On August 18, the council of ministers approved the draft of the “Constitution (16th Amendment) Act 2014," allowing the restoration of parliament’s authority to impeach Supreme Court judges.
The final approval was given on condition of vetting of the Law Ministry. The draft bill was prepared and tabled in the cabinet by the same ministry.
