A Dhaka court yesterday ordered a judicial probe into a case filed in connection with the custodial death of Jony at Pallabi police station, accusing Sub-Inspector (SI) Zahid and eight others, including Officer-in-Charge Ziaur Rahman.
Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Md Jahurul Haque passed the order after recording the deposition of plaintiff Imtiaz Hossain Rocky, the brother of the deceased victim.
Rocky filed the case against 8 people under Section 15 of the Torture and Custodial Death Act, 2013.
The other accused in the case are then Pallabi police station’s SI Zahidur Rahman Zahid, SI Abdul Batten, SI Md Rashed, SI Shovon Kumar Shaha, police constable Nazrul Islam and police source Sumon and Rasel.
According to the case details, on the night of February 8, police source Sumon came to a bridal party at Irani Camp in the Pallabi area, where both Jony and Rocky were present, in a drunken state and harassed a female performer on the stage.
Later, a quarrel took place between Sumon and Jony when the latter told him not to harass the performer.
At around 2pm, Sumon came back to the party with SI Zahid and picked up the two brothers.
The accused then beat up Jony and Rocky with hockey sticks and cricket stumps at the police station.
At one point, Jony became unconscious from the police beating. He was sent to the National Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead.
The case details also said following Jony’s death, police tried to cover up the killing by mentioning that Jony died during a clash between Irani and Rahmat camp in the area.
Earlier on July 20, some 10 people, including SI Zahid and the officer-in-charge of Mirpur police station, were sued for allegedly torturing a young trader to death in police custody.
The plaintiff Mumtaz Sultana Luchi, wife of victim Mahbubur Rahman Sujon, filed the case.
