Hundreds of workers of Hatchong BD Limited, a sweater factory in Baroipara area under Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur, staged a demonstration and observed work abstension yesterday morning demanding arears.
Workers said the factory authority had recently stopped proving the overtime remuneration to them.
In the morning, the workers went to the factory and demanded the authority to include overtime remuneration into their salary.
Earlier, the garment authority pledged that it would provide overtime remunartion to those workers who stay at factory after 5pm, according labour law.
As the authority refused to pay overtime's salary, the workers left their working place and started a peacefull demonstration in front of the factory.
Confirming the incident, officer in charge of Gazipur industrial police -2 Mohammed Zakir Hossain said the workers of different sweater factories were forced to work through a contractual basis. Workers of Hatchong BD Limited has been working under the same rules.
However, the factory authority had to pay the workers extra duty before few months. But it contradicts with other sweater factories accordance with the government policy for overtime remuniration.
To harmonize with the other factories, Hatchong BD Limited has stopped the payment of overtime money since June.
Zakir Hossain added that additional police had been deployed near the factory to avoid any untoward situation.
