OC among 5 police officials sued in Sylhet

Five police officials including the officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station have been sued on Friday in connection with torturing a businessman in police custody.

Rahamat Ullah, aditional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, confirmed the information to the Dhaka Tribune.

Shamim Ahmed Choudhwry, younger brother of the victim Kamal Ahmed Choudhwry, filed a case with the Koowali police station following a high court order.

The accused in the case are Kotwali police staion OC Ataur Rahaman, Sub-Inspector Abdur Rahim, Assistant Sub-Inspector Abu Taher and constable Adhir.

The case was filed under section 15 of the Torture and Custodial Death Act, 2013.

Earlier on July 24, an HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Choudhury and Justice Md Habibul Gani directed the inspector general of police and Sylhet police commissioner to take legal action against OC Ataur after Kamal’s younger brother, Shamim Ahmed Chowdhury, filed a writ with the High Court on July 24 in connection with the arrest and alleged torture.

The HC also asked the National Human Rights Commission Chairman to submit to it an investigation report on the incident within four weeks.

Kamal Ahmed Chowdhury was arrested in the Sylhet city on July 17 for breaching traffic laws.

Following the arrest, Kamal was tortured in the police station, alleged the arrestee’s family.
