Two accused remanded, Minar falls sick

A Feni court yesterday placed two more people, accused in Fulgazi Upazila chairman Ekramul Haque murder case, on a three-day police remand.

Earlier, the investigation officer of the case and inspector of Fulgazi model police station produced Arafan Hossain Kawsar, 18, and Saiful Islam Paban, 19, before Senior Judicial Magistrate Khairul Amin seeking their remand.

Police arrested Kawsar on Sunday and Paban early yesterday. Inspector Azad told the Dhaka Tribune that they had arrested Paban from Brinchi area of Feni acting on a tip-off around 12:30am.

He said they identified him through video footage. Some arrestees in their statements also mentioned that Paban had provided the criminals with kerosene which was used to set Ekram’s car on fire, the official added.

With the arrest of Paban, a total of 25 people have so far been arrested in the case. Of them, 13 gave confessional statements. Police are still on the hunt for 28 others who were allegedly involved with the murder.

Meanwhile, BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar was shown arrested in a case filed by Ekram during the upazila polls for attempted murder.

The suspect fell sick around 9:30pm yesterday in Feni Jail following a cardiac arrest. He was shifted to Feni Sadar Hospital and then to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in the capital, Jailer Shahidul Alam said.

Meanwhile, Nagorik Samaj and Ekram Mancha have called a 48-hour strike at Fulgazi starting from today demanding the arrest of Ekram’s killers and their punishment.
