A Chittagong court sent 15 former employees of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) to jail yesterday in a case regarding the misappropriation of fabrics from an export-bound container in the port yard.
Judge Farida Parvin of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court passed the order when the accused surrendered before the court, according to court sources.
The accused are: former clerks Humayun Kabir, Adhir Kanti Chakraborty, Pradip Kumar Mohajon, Mostafizur Rahman and Shyamol Kumar Bhowmik, former junior clerk Md Atikur Rahman, former assistant traffic inspector Saleh Jahur, former security guards Sirajul Haq Molla, Ali Azam Chowdhury, Monir Ahmed, Kamaluddin Chowdhury, Nazrul Islam and Sagir Ahmed, and former assistant sub-inspectors Harun Chowdhury and Mizanur Rahman.
Advocate Mahmudul Haque Mahmud, counsel for the Anti-Corruption Commission, told the Dhaka Tribune that the 15 accused were on bail from the High Court and they surrendered before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court after their bail period ended, asking for a bail extension.
“The court rejected their petition and sent them to jail,” he said.
ACC Deputy Assistant Director Sirajul Haq filed a case with the Port police station accusing 17 former employees on February 27, 2004 which is still under investigation, Mahmud said.
The accused, allegedly collaborating with one other person, had stolen 90 bundles of fabrics from a container for export, kept in Yard No 1 of the port from February 1, 2000 to April 12, 2000, said the ACC counsel.
