Foreign envoys want new image for Bangladesh

Update : 23 Apr 2014, 04:48 AM

Foreign envoys have expressed hope that authorities of Bangladesh will work together for a new image of the country with improved working conditions for the factory workers.

“This large and growing garment sector is critical to Bangladesh's economy,” the high commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh Heather Cruden said.

“It is responsible for significant increases in women's employment and economic empowerment of the country,” she said at a programme on Tuesday.

British High Commissioner Robert Gibson said Bangladesh made significant progress since Rana Plaza tragedy but “big challenges still remain.”

“UK's support is focused on the areas where action is needed: improving building safety and working conditions, empowering workers and urging buyers to take responsibility of their supply chain.”

Netherlands' Ambassador Gerben de Jong said the government, employers' associations, trade unions, brands and international community must continue to work together for transformation of the RMG sector.

“They must work together to transform the RMG sector that is marred by the images we see before us to one that highlights empowered women in safe environment.”

The envoys were speaking at a preview photo exhibition on the life and struggle of garment workers in Bangladesh on the eve of one year in the passing of Rana Plaza incident.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed also attended the programme. The photo exibition will continue at Drik Gallery in the capital Wednesday until April 21.
