Eighteen suspected leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, were sent to jail after they were produced before a Dhaka court yesterday.

The activists were arrested Thursday night from a building in the capital’s Azimpur in connection with their alleged involvement with vandalism and arson during hartals.

All the detainees were students of different educational institutions, including Dhaka University and Dhaka College, aged between 18 to 30 years.

Officer-in-Charge Nurul Muttakin of Lalbagh police station said they were shown arrested in a case linked to vandalism and arson to vehicles during the hartal period. “We have produced them before the court seeking their remand for different periods, and the court ordered to send all of them to the jail,” the OC said.

The OC said they were arrested while they had been holding a secret meeting at a mess building in Azimpur.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mahibullah of Lalbagh police station said: “A team of police raided a building named Hometek Tower at Azimpur and picked up 18 of them around 9pm.”
