Police yesterday rescued an abducted madrasa student and arrested his alleged kidnappers, who had demanded Tk1.5 lakh in ransom, from a village in Hizla upazila of Barisal district.
Shawkat Anwar, officer in charge of Hizla police station, said the victim, Nurunnabi, 11, a student of Baitus Sajud Hafezi Madrasa in Dhaka’s Keraniganj area, was abducted by a couple while he was returning home to his village in Mehendiganj upazila by launch last week.
Nurrunnabi boarded the MV Shariatpur 3 from the capital’s Sadar Ghat launch terminal on Thursday evening, Shawkat said. When the vessel reached Dhulkhola in Hizla on Friday morning, a couple of fellow passengers pretended that they had reached Mehendiganj launch station, and disembarked with him there.
The couple, Sagor Gazi, 25, and Hazera Begum, 26, then held Nurunnabi hostage at a house in Mandrachar Kusria village in Hizla. Sagor later contacted the boy’s parents over mobile phone and demanded Tk1.5 lakh to release him, the police officer said.
Nurunnabi’s family members in Charlata village informed the police, who then tracked the phone call and rescued the victim yesterday afternoon.
Police also arrested the kidnappers and filed a case against the couple with Hizla police station.
