55 hurt in separate clashes in Meherpur, Gopalganj

At least 55 people were injured in separate clashes in Meherpur and Gopalganj yesterday.  

Forty people sustained injuries as a clash took place between the residents of two villages at Gangni upazila over felling trees of a graveyard yesterday afternoon.

The clash took place between the villagers of Kochuikhali and Dighalkanti.

Abdus Samad, member of Dhankhola Union Parishad, said residents of Kochuikhali and Dighalkanti villages had been mutually using a graveyard for long.

But some residents of Dighalkanti village went to the graveyard in the morning and started falling down tress of the graveyard without prior notice.

Hearing the news of trees’ felling, people of Kochuikhali village rushed to the spot and prevented them from cutting the trees, resulting a clash. 

On information, a team from Gangni police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Masudul Alam, officer-in-charge of Gangni police station, said no case had been filed in this connection.

The injured were admitted to Gangni Upazila Health Complex and Meherpur General Hospital.

Later, two of the injured, Mozammel Hossen Khokon, 46, and Montu Mian, 43, of Kochuikhali village were shifted to Kushtia Medical College Hospital as their conditions deteriorated.

Of the injured, Abu Taher, 65, Mojibur Rahman, 40, Israil Hossein, 35, Ahabuddin, 45, Hasibul Islam, 28, Sufal Hossain, 40, of village Kochuikhali, Mansur Ali, 45 and Lokman Ali are undergoing treatments while others received primary treatment. 

At least 15 people, including four cops, were injured in a clash between two groups of Miapara and Ghosher Char in Gopalganj town yesterday over a trifling matter.

Locals said, on March 27, few residents of Ghoser Char beat Rezwan over a trifling matter, a resident of Miapara.

Later, two groups locked into clash and a group of Ghosher Char damaged a few shops in the town.

Over the issue, another group of Miapara had attacked the Ghosher Char group.

Police fired rubber bullets and tear shells to bring the situation under control. During the clash 15 including four police personnel were injured.

Md Selim Reza, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj police station said five persons had been picked up during the clash.

Traders held a rally protesting the incident. Farid Ahmed, Nasu Sikdar, Ahsan Al Hossain and Saiful Islam Sheikh Lipon addressed the rally.
