Chhatra League criticises Gonojagoron

Update : 27 Mar 2014, 10:07 PM

Ruling Awami League’s student body Bangladesh Chhatra League and some students of Dhaka University yesterday demonstrated against Gonojagoron Moncho and its spokesperson Imran H Sarker for using the national flag colours on a stage at Projonmo Chattar on Wednesday.

They formed a human chain under the banner of “Conscious Students” on DU campus, protesting the “wrongdoing.” Later, they brought out a silent procession.

Chhatra League’s central unit Deputy Secretary for Cultural Affairs Sheikh Asman and DU unit Organising Secretary Aditya Nandi demanded punishment for Imran for “demeaning” the dignity of the national flag.

When contacted, Imran told the Dhaka Tribune that it was a conspiracy. He claimed that Chhatra League leader Asman, a student of DU Fine Arts Institute, had demanded toll from Moncho activists on March 25 midnight when they were working on the stage.

“As the activists declined to pay the money, Asman arranged the demonstration [yesterday] to take revenge.”

About Chhatra League’s protest against the used of red and green on the stage, Imran said the agitators did not know the use of the national flag and so were spreading such propaganda.

Gonojagoron Moncho made the stage at the Shahbagh intersection for a rally and cultural programme to observe the Independence Day.

Imran that day bitterly criticised the government for not implementing the Moncho’s six-point demand, including banning Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, and taking action against Jamaat’s financial institutions. He also slammed the government and the Awami League’s associate bodies for frequently taking donations from pro-Jamaat organisations, including the Islami Bank.
