Update : 17 Mar 2014, 07:22 PM

Every citizen’s right to water cannot be ensured without empowering women to play a leadership role in the country’s water-related decisions, according to participants at a panel discussion on various water related issues.

The participants said creation of new social business models for water were required to solve problems related to water in the country. Discussants also stressed the need for an effective rain water harvesting system and the creation of a water code of responsibility in office and homes.

The views came at a discussion titled “Is Water Important To You?” organised by AmaderPani.org in the capital’s Dhaka Regency Hotel on Saturday. The theme of the discussion was aligned with UN World Water Day 2014 campaign: Water and Energy.

Afrina Choudhury, a gender specialist at The World Fish Center, and Bidhan Chandra Pal, executive member of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon, spoke at the programme, among others.Several students and representatives of youth organisations also participated the discussion.

AmaderPani.org is a new blog site aimed at encouraging water related conversation amongst the youth of the country. The independent blog is supported by a leading water management company, PNL Holdings Ltd. PNL is the mother company that markets the popular Pedrollo water pumps in Bangladesh since 1985.
