Update : 17 Feb 2014, 10:25 PM

A Dhaka court yesterday summoned seven people, including Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul, in a compensation case alleging defamation of the Banshundhara Group.

The other defendants are Salma Islam, editor of the daily Jugantor, Shamim Islam, son of Nurual Islam Babul and Salma Islam, Shaiful Islam, executive editor of the daily Jugantor, Jamuna Print, Daily Jugantor and Jamuna Future Park.

Dhaka First Joint District Judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan asked the defendants to appear before the court on March 30 and give written statements.

Earlier on the day, Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan filed a case against the defendants demanding Tk1,100crore compensation.

According to the case statement, he alleged that the Bangla daily had been publishing false and baseless accusations against the Bashundhara group since October 28 last year.

The reports were published with an intention of tarnishing the image of the Bashundhara group, he said.

After the reports were published, a written complaint was sent to Jugantor, which the daily newspaper did not publish to the word, the plaintiff said

On February 9, the group’s senior Deputy Managing Director Md Balayet Hossein filed another defamation case before a Dhaka court against the daily Jugantor on same charges.

Taking the case into cognisance, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tasruzzaman ordered Bhatara police station to submit an investigation report in this regard.
