HC for action against Meghna encroachers

Update : 13 Feb 2014, 11:37 AM

The High Court on Thursday ordered police to take proper legal actions against those responsible for earth-filling and constructing jetties on the Meghna River in Ashuganj.

The HC also directed Brahmanbaria DC, SP, Ashuganj OC and BIWTA to take necessary steps within seven days to have the construction material, kept there for the construction of jetties, removed.

The government has been asked to submit a report before the court in four weeks after complying with the order.

The HC also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why the construction of jetties along the river and the encroachment should not be declared illegal.

Judge Salma Masud Chowdhury and Habibul Gani passed the order against the writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The shipping secretary, BITWA chairman, Brahmanbaria DC, SP and 10 others, are defendants in the case.

Supreme Court lawyer Manzill Murshid presented the arguments while Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman represented the government.
