Several hundred residents of Irani Camp in the capital’s Pallabi clashed with police protesting the death of a youth under police custody on Sunday morning.

The clash erupted around 12pm. The agitating demonstrators also demanded release of four other detainees.

The victim was identified as Md Johnny. The 25-year-old youth was arrested along with four others.

Johnny died around 10:30am at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) seven hours after he was arrested. The five were picked up around 3am following a clash between two groups of people of Irani Camp and Rahmat Camp in Pallabi.

Other arrestees were identified as his brother Md Rocky, 22, Md Faisal, 20, Mainnul Islam Rajan, 24, and Sharif Ahmed Titu, 26.

Son of Mohammad Mostofa of Irani Camp, Johnny was a sari trader at the Irani Camp, said Meer Mohammad Ali, a brother in-law of Johnny.

“Johnny was not a criminal and he was a businessman. He was tortured to death by police after he was arrested along with four others, including his brother,” said Mohammad Ali.
