SCBA demands minister’s removal who phoned judge

Update : 05 Feb 2014, 04:24 PM

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) urged the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to remove the minister who had phoned the High Court to pass verdict in favor of a particular party with regards to a bank loan related suit.

AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, secretary of SCBA and joint secretary of BNP made the call to the premier at a press briefing on Wednesday.

He also demanded that the Chief Justice, through the SC registrar should lodge a contempt of court case and a criminal case against the minister.

On Monday, the High Court bench of Justice Sharif Uddin Chaklader and Justice AKM Shahidul Huq said: “During the hearing of this matter, a minister called one of us. Therefore, we are not inclined to hear this matter. Let this matter be placed before the Chief Justice for appropriate order.”

When the suit came for hearing, the bench said they would not hear the matter because of the minister’s lobbying. However, in the order, the court did not disclose the name of the minister and for whom he had lobbied.

In reply to a question, Khokon said they had learnt through a reliable source that the minister has been in office since the formation of Awami League, and led the grand alliance’s government after the ninth parliamentary polls, and he is still in office now.

The SCBA pressed for not interfering with the judiciary rulings of the government.
