Update : 03 Feb 2014, 07:14 PM

The Rapid Action Battalion rescued 55 people in Ukhia upazila in the wee hours yesterday as they were being trafficked to Malaysia.

The elite force members also held two traffickers Rustam Ali and Kaiser from the spot.

RAB 7 Commander Rashedul Alam said: “Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB conducted the drive and held Rustam and his son Kaiser along with some 55 illegal Malaysia goers.

“They were trying to traffic some 100 people but more than 40 people fled the scene upon sensing the presence of RAB,” he added.

Rustam Ali is known to have been trafficking people to Malaysia in fishing boats for a long time. It is believed that he had trafficked about 1,000 men to Malaysia last month.
