The Bangla daily Inqilab’s Diplomatic Correspondent Ahmmed Atiq gave his confessional statement yesterday before the court.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-Or-Rashid recorded his statement and sent him to jail rejecting his bail plea.
Atiq’s lawyer Syed Ahmed Gazi alleged that the police had tortured Atiq into giving a confessional statement.
On January 20, a Dhaka court granted police a two-day remand for questioning Atiq on why and on what grounds he had prepared a fabricated news report, and who else were involved with it.
Wari police station Sub-Inspector KM Firoz Ali produced him before the court after completion of the remand, seeking to record his confessional statement.
Inqilab News Editor Rabiulla Ulla Robi, Deputy Chief Reporter Rafiq Mohammad and Atiq were detained on January 16 for allegedly producing a fabricated news item regarding the presence of the Indian military inside Bangladeshi territory.
