A Barguna court yesterday rejected the bail petitions of Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman and four other BNP leaders and sent them to jail.
The five jailed BNP leaders are: Lt Col (retd) Abdul Khalek, chairman of Barguna Sadar Upazila Parishad and convener of district Krishak Dal, Rashedul Hasan, organizing secretary of municipal BNP, Mainul Islam, district president of Matsyajibi Dal, Shahjalal, president of district Olama Dal, and Mojibor Rahman, vice-president of Ward No 2 of municipal BNP.
Court sources said BNP leader Khalek was accused in four cases, which includes arson on voting centers, buses and assault on law enforcers. Three other BNP leaders have been accused in two cases, including arson, attack on buses and assault on law enforcers.
After surrendering to the court yesterday, the accused BNP leaders appealed for bail.
However, Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Masum Billah rejected their petitions and sent them to jail, as the cases filed against them were lodged under the non-bailable sections of the Special Power Act and the Speedy Trial Act.
