A tribunal yesterday convicted nine people and sentenced them to life-term imprisonment for killing two students of the Shahjalal University of Engineering and Technology in 2011.
Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Dilip Kumar Debnath also fined the convicts Tk20,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more of rigorous imprisonment.
The convicts are Md Gulzar, Sail Miah, Shaheen Ahmed, Lal Miah, Saimuddin, Md Jamal Miah, Rakib Miah alias Abdur Rakib, Md Abdullah and Selim Miah.
All of them are from the sadar upazila of Sylhet. Of them, Gulzar and Rakib were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Khairul Kabir and Dipankar Ghosh Anik, both second year students of Chemical Engineering Department, were killed in an attack by some miscreants while traveling in a boat on Chenger Khal (canal) at Putimara, some 4km off the campus, on December 16, 2011.
A murder case was filed on the same day. On June 15, 2012, police submitted a charge sheet against the nine accused. They were indicted on September 30.
