Eight police officials transferred for failing to handle political turmoil

Update : 15 Dec 2013, 09:14 PM

In a major reshuffle of police administrations, eight top brass officials ranking from deputy inspector general (DIG) to superintendent of police (SP) were transferred yesterday for reportedly failing to handle the recent mayhem carried by hartal and blockade supporters

A DIG, two additional DIGs and five SPs have been transferred to different posts, according to sources at the home ministry and Police Headquarters.

Of the different government service sectors, the railways have been significantly damaged because of hartal and blockade supporters.

However, concerned high-ranking police officials failed to maintain security in the state-run communication system, sources said.

According to intelligence reports, continuous attacks by Jamaat-Shibir and 18-party alliance pickets caused serious damage to railway engines, compartments, tracks, stations offices and passengers.

The Police Headquarters sources said the officials failed to check the attacks despite being provided with the reports earlier.

Because of such inefficient handling of violence, a number of train engines and compartments were damaged after being derailed, and several hundred passengers sustained injuries during the attacks, said one of the sources.

The SPs of Satkhira, Dinajpuar and Narail have been transferred for failing to maintain law and order and thwart subversive activities in their concerned districts during hartal and blockade programmes.

DIG to railway range Sohrab Hossain has been transferred to the Sarda Police Academy in Rajshahi and has been replaced by Additional DIG (Equipment) Kamrul Ahsan of Police Headquarters.

As per an order from the home ministry, another additional DIG of railway range Rowshan Ara Begum has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department.

Among the SPs, Mollah Jahangir Hossain of Satkhira district has been posted as deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) while Deputy Commissioner of DMP Chowdhury Manjurul Kabir replaced him.

SP to Dinajpur Sarwar Morshed Shameem was transferred to the Sarda Police Academy and replaced by Decputy Commissioner to DMP Ruhul Amin.

SP Monir Hossain, who has recently returned from the United Nation’s Peace Keeping Mission, was made SP to Narail district.
