‘End discrimination against persons with disabilities’

Update : 03 Dec 2013, 06:34 PM

International Day of People with Disability was marked in Rangpur yesterday with a call to end repression and discrimination against persons with disabilities to enable them to lead a decent life.

Terming physically-challenged people as an “integral part of the society”, speakers at a post-rally convention said the time had come to bring them into the mainstream of society for the overall development of the nation.

The Department of Social Service and District Administration organised the discussion at Collectorate Bhaban premises in Rangpur city, reports BSS.

With Deputy Director of the department Begum Hamida Begum in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury addressed the discussion as the chief guest.

The speakers emphasised the need to establish a sound and friendly atmosphere for physically challenged persons to ensure a dignified position for them in society. They said all concerned should make the best use of all facilities in the greater interest of these people.

They urged the affluent section of the society as well as the philanthropists to come forward with their helping hands to supplement the government’s efforts to properly place the disadvantaged people in the society.

The children with disability must be given an equal opportunity in institutional education like the privileged ones so that they could grow as worthy citizens of the country.
