The International Crimes Tribunal 2 has received the war crimes charges brought against Syed M Kaiser and set November 14 for cognizance order.
Prosecutor Rana Das Gupta submitted the formal charges, giving a short profile of Kaiser and description of charges pressed against him for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 War of Liberation.
Accused Kaiser was then present in the dock.
The prosecution on Sunday submitted 18 charges against Kaiser, former state minister of Ershad’s regime, including killing, extermination, enslavement, deportation, abduction, confinement, torture, looting, arson and assisting in rape.
Kaiser was arrested on May 16. The tribunal later granted him conditional bail considering his age and now he is living in his son’s house.
Barrister Fakhrul to appear Nov 26
Meanwhile, tribunal 1 asked Fakhrul Islam, counsel for war crimes convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, to appear on November 26 to face the hearing on a contempt notice issued against him.
On Monday was fixed for the hearing but Fakhrul sent his junior with an adjournment petition seeking two months’ time.
The tribunal then adjourned the hearing till November 26 and said Fakhrul has to appear before the tribunal on that day.
The defence counsel on December 30, 2012 filed a petition seeking an explanation from the then sitting judges of tribunal 1, whether they had any knowledge about the alleged Skype conversation between Justice Nizamul Huq and Dr Ahmed Ziauddin.
On January 14, the tribunal issued a notice upon Fakhrul wanting to know why a contempt proceeding should not be initiated against him for lowering the court’s dignity.
