Qawmi Madrasa Board opposes proposed law

Update : 03 Nov 2013, 07:20 PM

The authorities of Bangladesh Qawmi Madrasa Education Board on Sunday accused the government of trying to destroy the centres which purely exercise Qur’an and Hadith, by enacting the Qawmi Madrasa Education Authority Act “as part of an international conspiracy.”

“The government is trying to bring the Qawmi madrasas under their control by enacting the act,” claimed Abdul Jabbar, secretary general of the board, while reading out a written statement at a press conference held in a community center at Chittagong’s Hathazari on Sunday morning.

He said the government formed Qawmi Madrasa Education Commission on April 15, 2010 with the aim to control Qawmi madrasas, adding that the commission Chairman Shah Ahmed Shafi and most of its members had resigned after sensing the conspiracy.

Jabbar said the government’s attempt to reshuffle the syllabus of Qawmi madrasas in the name of accrediting Qawmi certificates would destroy Qawmi education, as no Islamic scholar would emerge if the current syllabus was to be changed.

Qawmi madrasa teachers-students along with devoted Muslims would launch tough movements across the country if the government tried to enact the law, he also warned.

Other members of the Qawmi Madrasa Education Board – Nur Hossain Kashemi, Zafar Ullah Khan and Tajul Islam - were also present at the conference.
