Safety measures must be followed and manpower well-trained to ensure the safety of workers, speakers told a “Creating a Safer Workplace at Heights” discussion at a city hotel yesterday.
Representatives of companies including CEAT Bangladesh Limited, Grameenphone, Airtel, Banglalink, Rahimafrooz, and Meghnaghat Power Limited attended the programme, organised by Securex (pvt) Ltd.
Inspection under competent persons during work and rescue operations is also essential to ensure the safety of workers, the speakers said.
Reading instruction manuals is also necessary before using equipment, and the equipment needs to be checked regularly.
While talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Jean-Christophe Thiault, managing director of Capital Safety Group Asia PTE Ltd, said: “If you do not know how to use equipment in case of emergency you will face difficulties.”
Abdullah Al Mahmud of Meghnaghat Power Limited said: “We have been using the safety protection equipment for our workers since three years. These have been helpful in ensuring safety at workplace.”
Fall from heights is the main cause of workplace death in construction, telecom and marine industries, the speakers observed. Santosh K of Capital Safety Group Asia PTE Ltd said injury or death of a worker does not only have one single effect.
“Apart from losing money, worker and fame, an accident demoralises the fellow workers of the victim,” he said.
Farhan Quddus, managing director of Securex (Pvt) Ltd, told the Dhaka Tribune: “We want workers’ safety which is an integral part to run a company.”
