RMG workers block Kuril Bishwa Road

Update : 24 Sep 2013, 04:35 AM

On Tuesday morning, workers from four readymade garment factories blocked Kuril Bishwa Road in the capital, demanding a living wage.

The agitating workers from Urozone, Gazi Tower, Mohammadia and Classic Garments also broke the windows of Sinha Garments, located in the area.

Lutful Kabir, deputy commissioner of Gulshan Division, told the Dhaka Tribune that additional police force had been deployed in the area to control the situation.

Vehicular movement on airport road remained suspended due to the blockade.

The garment workers have been staging sporadic demonstrations over the week in the capital, Savar and Gazipur demanding minimum monthly wages of Tk8,000.

On Monday, a group of youths attacked an Ansar camp at Joydevpur, Gazipur and looted firearms and ammunition. Four Ansar members including a commander were injured in the sudden attack .

Negotiations for raised wages failed to reach a conclusion, with workers’ representatives asking for a minimum wage of Tk8,000 and factory owners offering Tk3,600, resulting in frustration among workers’ rights groups.
