‘Alim was not president of Peace Committee’

Update : 16 Sep 2013, 07:47 PM

The defence counsels for war crimes suspect Abdul Alim Monday refuted the claim that the accused had been the chief of Joypurhat district Peace committee during the 1971 Liberation War.

They also claimed that neither Alim had been a razakar (collaborator) nor Maj Afzal was the commander of Pakistani occupation forces in Joypurhat at that time.

Earlier, several prosecution witnesses said Alim had been seen with one Maj Afzal in many atrocities that took place in Joypurhat during the war.

The prosecution also submitted documents in favour of the claim to the tribunal.

Defence counsels Ahsanul Huq and Abu Yusuf M Khalilur Rahman said these while placing closing arguments for the second day at the International Crimes Tribunal 2 of Justice Obaidul Hasan, Justice Mojibur Rahman Miah and Justice Shahinur Islam.

Following an appeal by counsel Ahsanul, the tribunal set today for further procedure of the case. The tribunal also asked the defence to be prepared for a whole-day argument today and to complete by Wednesday.

A former minister of Ziaur Rahman’s cabinet, Alim is facing 17 charges of crimes against humanity.
