Update : 12 May 2025, 04:24 PM

The government has officially published a gazette amending the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, now enabling authorities to ban the activities of any party or organization.

The Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, which updates the original 2009 law, was published by the Ministry of Law on Sunday.

The amendment removes previous legal barriers to banning political parties’ operations and also prohibits online or social media campaigning by any such banned group.

Earlier, the Advisory Council approved the draft of the ordinance, which allows for banning individuals or entities engaged in terrorist activities, as well as their operations.

While the 2009 law allowed for banning parties, it did not permit banning their activities specifically.

On Saturday, the government also published a gazette amending the International Crimes Tribunal Act,1973 enabling punishment of political parties, their affiliated or associated bodies, and supporter groups.
