Home minister conveys concern over Felani verdict

Update : 15 Sep 2013, 07:50 PM

Mentioning that Bangladesh was worried about the verdict in Felani murder case, Home Minister MK Alamgir on Sunday said the government was waiting for the verdict in the revision trial.

“We have urged the BSF delegation to ensure justice in Felani killing case. They have assured us in this regard. We are now waiting for the verdict of the higher court of India,” Alamgir told reporters at his ministry after a meeting with Border Security Force (BSF) chief Subhas Joshi.

The BSF director general is currently in Bangladesh to attend the director general-level conference with his counterpart.

The Indian border force on Friday announced that they would hold a revision trial in the case as the “competent authorities did not agree with the findings” of the BSF special court, which on September 6 had acquitted constable Amiya Ghosh, who had confessed to the killing because of “inconclusive and insufficient” evidence.

Earlier, the foreign ministry expressed frustration over the verdict and said the government would appeal against the verdict.

The home minister said Bangladeshi and Indian border security forces had agreed to work together to stop smuggling along the border area. “They will work together to ensure a peaceful border between the two friendly countries.”

During the meeting, the BSF chief refused to allow open entry or import of cattle from India, he added.

Mainly cattle “smugglers” alongside locals have been falling victim to BSF shootings for years. The earlier BSF chief, had proposed, last year that the cattle trading be legalised to cut down on the number of border killings.

Earlier, India in several high-level meetings had agreed to use rubber bullets instead of lethal weapons to implement zero-killing policy along the border.
