A Dhaka court Monday sentenced seven people to lifetime in prison on charge of killing Dhaka BAR Association member Imdadul Haque Talukder, 45.
Judge at Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4, ABM Nizamul Haque gave the verdict after examining 23 out of 33 prosecution witnesses.
The court also fined each of them Tk20,000, and in case of their inability to pay the amount, one more year of imprisonment would be imposed.
The sentenced convicts were Billal Mridha, Belayet Kazi, Ishrafil Shikder, Md Mizan, Monir (alias Monir Matbar), Md Ibrahim and Md Romance Hawlader alias Roman. All of them are residents of Madaripur district.
The prime accused, Billal Mridha, was produced before the court during the verdict. The other six remained absconding. The court ordered to issue arrest warrant against the six.
The victim’s son, Meherin Hossain Abeer, who was present at the court, expressed dissatisfaction over the verdict saying he expected capital punishment to the killers of his father, he told the Dhaka Tribune.
“As we did not get justice from this court, we will appeal in the higher court,” he said.
Meanwhile, the defence lawyer Md Mizanur Rahman Khan told to the Dhaka Tribune, that they will appeal against the verdict.
According to the case detail, on April 28, 2006, Imdadul Haque Talukdar, a member of Dhaka BAR Association, was on his way his brother’s residence in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
A gang of muggers in another taxicab intercepted his vehicle and tried to snatch his belongings. As Talukder tried to resist the muggers, they strangled him to death.
