Oishee lands in Kashimpur jail

Update : 31 Aug 2013, 07:23 PM

Around five hours after she was shifted to Dhaka Central Jail from Gazipur Juvenile Development Centre on Saturday, Oishee Rahman was further transferred to Kashimpur Jail in the afternoon.

Forman Ali, senior superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail, said: “A deputy assistant caretaker of the juvenile centre handed Oishee over to his jail at noon. But around 5pm, she was shifted to Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail.”

The Kashimpur Women Central Jail is a better-facilitated jail, which has the capacity to accommodate 300 prisoners, but it now has only 150.

Oishee and detained housemaid Sumi, accused of murdering police inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Begum, were taken to the juvenile centre on August 24 considering their age.

However, Oishee was ordered jail by a court as her age was shown over 18.

Earlier, they were remanded by the Detective Branch for five days.

Since the police were allowed to take Oishee into remand, media, rights activists and National Human Rights Commission Chairman Mizanur Rahman had been criticising it.

But the police had been sincere to prove that the girl was adult. The DB officials managed her birth certificate from a Khulna Hospital, where she was claimed to be born.

The certificate reads that the girl was over 18 and they produced the certificate before the court as evidence.

DB Inspector Md Abu-al-Khayer Matubbar, also investigation officer of the case, and social welfare department Probation Officer Siddiqur Rahman, on Friday filed two separate petitions before the Dhaka’s juvenile court.

Magistrate Muhammad Anwar Sadat ordered the National Juvenile Development and Correction Centre to send Oishee to jail.

However, the result of the medical tests conducted on August 22 at the Radiology and Imaging Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital did not specify the age of the girl.
