12 new labour wings set to open

Update : 06 Aug 2013, 05:23 AM

He also said one important task of the Geneva wing would be to maintain liaisons with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The Thailand wing, on the other hand, would facilitate exploring new avenues, with the government likely to sign a bilateral agreement with the country to that effect soon.

The wings in Russia, Australia, Milan and the Maldives would assist migrants already working there and help create new labour opportunities for Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the ministry has run advertisements to recruit 4 ministers (with status similar to a joint secretary), 6 labour counsellors and 13 first secretaries for the new labour wings.

However, the recruitment process has already been marred by allegations of lobbying and bribery, although Zafar Ahmed Khan ensured "total transparency" in the process.

Earlier, labour wings were opened in Riyadh, Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Malaysia, Singapore, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, Libya, Jordan, Italy, Japan and South Korea.
